First Generation
1983

The GMC version called the S-15 Jimmy.
Available engines included

an 84 HP / 101 TQ 1.9L 2 bbl carburated 4 cyl (Vin A)
an 83 HP / 108 TQ 2.0L 2 bbl carburated 4 cyl (Vin Y)
a 58 HP / 93 TQ 2.2L Diesel 4 cyl (Vin S)
a 110 HP / 148 TQ 2.8L 2 bbl carburated V6 (Vin B).

1984

A heavy-duty suspension and off-road package was introduced.
Hydraulic style clutch introduced.
Available engines included

an 84 HP / 101 TQ 1.9L 2 bbl carburated 4 cyl (Vin A)
an 83 HP / 108 TQ 2.0L 2 bbl carburated 4 cyl (Vin Y)

1985

GM discontinued the 2.0L engine in the S-Series and replaced it with the 2.5L

1986

GM discontinued the 1.9 Liter 4 CYL and the 2.2 Liter 4 CYL.
The 2.8 received Throttle Body Injection (TBI) and was converted to serpentine belts.
GM redesigned the interior of the S-Series.
Available engines included

a 92 HP / 134 TQ 2.5L "Iron Duke" TBI 4 cyl (Vin E)
a 125 HP / 150 TQ 2.8L TBI V6 (Vin R).

1987

A new 3spd automatic transmission and a new, quite transfer case were introduced.
Available engines included

a 92 HP / 134 TQ 2.5L "Iron Duke" TBI 4 cyl (Vin E)
a 125 HP / 150 TQ 2.8L TBI V6 (Vin R).

1988

GM introduced the 4.3 Liter V6.
Available engines included

a 92 HP / 134 TQ 2.5L "Iron Duke" TBI 4 cyl (Vin E)
a 125 HP / 150 TQ 2.8L TBI V6 (Vin R).
a 150 HP / 230 TQ 4.3L TBI V6 (Vin Z).

1989

Rear wheel anti-lock brakes introduced.
An electronic instrument cluster, a new speedometer and transfer case were also introduced.
Available engines included

a 92 HP / 134 TQ 2.5L "Iron Duke" TBI 4 cyl (Vin E)
a 125 HP / 150 TQ 2.8L TBI V6 (Vin R).
a 160 HP / 230 TQ 4.3L TBI V6 (Vin Z).

1990

The 5spd manual tranny and the 2.5L 4 cyl were improved.
The standard equipment was increased.
Available engines included

a 105 HP / 135 TQ 2.5L "Iron Duke" TBI 4 cyl (Vin E)
a 125 HP / 150 TQ 2.8L TBI V6 (Vin R).
a 160 HP / 230 TQ 4.3L TBI V6 (Vin Z).

1991

A 4dr version of the Jimmy was introduced in 2wd or 4wd. It arrived in Spring of 1990 as a 1991 model.
Four-door models get new Gypsy package on the options list.
It includes two-tone paint, alloy wheels and chrome trim.
A heavy-duty battery is standard on all models, and 2WD Jimmys can be equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels.
Front bench seat option will give four-door six passenger capacity.
SLT Touring Package with softer suspension added midyear.
GM redesigned the grille so that it was one piece.
Available engines included

a 105 HP / 135 TQ 2.5L "Iron Duke" TBI 4 cyl (Vin A or E)
a 125 HP / 150 TQ 2.8L TBI V6 (Vin R).
a 160 HP / 230 TQ 4.3L TBI V6 (Vin Z).

1992

Four-wheel ABS is standard on all models Blazers and Jimmies.
Bucket seats are redesigned, a new speedometer is installed, and a four-spoke steering wheel is added.
An optional electronic shift transfer case for 4x4 models was introduced and was standard with comes standard with SLT trim.
A 195 HP / 260 TQ H.O. 4.3L became available.

a 105 HP / 135 TQ 2.5L "Iron Duke" TBI 4 cyl (Vin A)
a 125 HP / 150 TQ 2.8L TBI V6 (Vin R).
a 160 HP / 230 TQ 4.3L TBI V6 (Vin Z).

1993

In 1993 they changed the grill slightly.
2dr models are now available available in SLT trim.
Four-door models get monochromatic paint scheme in SLS trim.
The 4spd 4L60-E Electronic version of the TH700-R4 was introduced. Auto trannies second-gear start feature.
Manual lumbar adjusters are newly standard on front seats
The 4.3L received a balance shaft to help control vibration in the engine.
Available engines included

a 105 HP / 135 TQ 2.5L "Iron Duke" TBI 4 cyl (Vin A)
a 125 HP / 150 TQ 2.8L TBI V6 (Vin R).
a 165 HP / 235 TQ 4.3L TBI V6 (Vin Z).

1994

Jimmies now have front bench seats tandard on four-door models.
Side-door guard beams and a high-mounted center brake light are added.
The 2.2L Gasoline engine was introduced.
The GMC Typhoon was dropped.
GM discontinued the 2.8 Liter v6.

a 165 HP / 235 TQ 4.3L TBI V6 (Vin Z).

Second Generation
1995

Jimmy was redesigned to match the new 2nd Gen Sonoma.
Four-wheel-drive models have electronic transfer case as standard equipment.
Spare tire on four-door model is mounted beneath cargo bay instead of in it.
Five different suspension packages are available.
All-wheel drive is optional in the Jimmy.
Driver airbag and air conditioning are standard equipment.
Available engines included

a 118 HP / 130 TQ 2.2L MPFI 4 cyl (Vin 4)
a 155 HP / 235 TQ 4.3L TBI V6 (Vin Z).
a 191 HP / 260 TQ 4.3L CMFI V6 (Vin W).

1996

GMC's popular compact sport utility gets an optional off-road package called Highrider, as well as an available five-speed transmission available on two-door models only.
The Highrider includes four-inch wider track, three-inch height increase, off-road suspension and tires, wheel flares, and thick skid plates.
All Jimmys receive Daytime Running Lights and long-life engine coolant.
All-wheel drive, which became optional in mid-1995, continues.
The Vortec engine was improved.
Spark plugs last 100,000 miles.

a 175 HP / 240 TQ (2wd), 180 HP / 240 TQ (4wd) 4.3L CSFI V6 (Vin W).

1997

GMC Highrider off-road package deleted as GMC realigns Jimmy as luxury sport-ute. Instead, buyers can opt for a Gold Edition in one of four colors.
New options include a power sunroof and HomeLink universal transmitter.
In a fit of good taste, Radar Purple and Bright Teal paint colors are replaced by Fairway Green and Smoky Caramel.
A console-mounted shifter for trucks equipped with a center console and bucket seats is a new option.
An improved 4spd automatic tranny was introduced.

a 118 HP / 130 TQ 2.2L SFI 4 cyl (Vin 4)
a 175 HP / 240 TQ (2wd), 180 HP / 240 TQ (4wd) 4.3L CSFI V6 (Vin W).

1998

A revised interior contains dual second-generation airbags, improved climate controls and available premium sound systems.
Outside, the front bumper, grille and headlights are new.
Side cladding is restyled and SLT models have new alloy wheels.
Fresh colors inside and out sum up the changes.
Available engines included

a 118 HP / 130 TQ 2.2L SFI 4 cyl (Vin 4)
a 175 HP / 240 TQ (2wd), 180 HP / 240 TQ (4wd) 4.3L CSFI V6 (Vin W).
a 180 HP / 245 TQ (2wd), 190 HP / 250 TQ (4wd) 4.3L CSFI V6 (Vin X).

1999

There are three new colors and revised outside mirrors, but most changes to the '99 Jimmy are inside.
New power-seating features and a mini-module depowered airbag in the steering wheel.
Redundant radio controls as well as a new Bose premium sound system and six-disc CD changer.
A vehicle content theft alarm, flash-to-pass headlamp feature, and liftgate ajar warning lamp have also been added.
4wd versions get the new AutoTrac active transfer case.
4dr models gain a Tow/Haul mode for the transmission.
Finally, the optional Z85 Euro-Ride suspension has been retuned.

a 120 HP / 140 TQ 2.2L SFI 4 cyl (Vin 4)
a 180 HP / 245 TQ (2wd), a 190 HP / 250 TQ (4wd) 4.3L CSFI V6 (Vin X).
